White
2009 Pico Maccario Chardonnay Unoaked
While Piedmont is most famous for Barolo and Barbaresco, it does make excellent Chardonnay. You can try Angelo Gaja's for $60 or perhaps try this delicious, dry Chardonnay for $8.99 this weekend. The region produces Chardonnay that has a touch more acidity and minerality to give backbone to the nectarine and peach flavors.

2008 Shaya Old Vine Verdejo
This highly rated (89 Wine Spectator) Spanish white is named after the species of deer that can be found near the vineyards. These gnarled vineyards planted a very long time ago in the sandy river stone soil produce the finest Verdejo in Rueda. There is a distinct minerality in this wine which compliments the abundance of fruit flavors. Verdejo will remind you of Sauvignon Blanc but without the degree of herbaciousness. Here's the Wine Spectator recommendation: "Quite rich, but still graceful, this white shows melon, orange blossom, green almond and lime zest flavors in a thick texture. Vibrant acidity keeps this lively. Drink now through 2010."

Rose
2009 Guillaume Lefevre Provence Rose
The hot weather this week reminds us it is still time to enjoy the value of fine, dry Rose wine. This lovely Provence rosé is a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Rolle (Vermentino). The color is classic pale, pink/salmon, with aromatics that are bright and clear, with notes of citrus, especially blood orange, and hints of lavender and minerals. For a southern French wine, the palate is quite racy and fresh. It is an irresistible, end of summer, poolside quaffer.

Red
2007 Domaine des Cantarelles Syrah de Fayel
From noted importer Robert Kacher comes this excellent Syrah value. There's a scrumptious bacon fat, smoky aroma. That spiciness mixed with the blackberry fruit flavor makes a winning combination. Perfect with foods from your grill or smoker.
