White

2009 Columbia Crest Grand Estates Pinot Gris

This rich Pinot Gris received an 89 “Best Buy” rating from the Wine Spectator.  “Crisp and lively, with grapefruit and spice flavors that zing neatly”. Juicy, refreshing flavors of melon and apple are complimented by hints of citrus fruits and balanced with fine acidity often lacking from competitors.

2010 Michel Gassier Nostre Pais White

Here is a great white first brought to our attention from a discerning customer received a 92 rating from Robert Parker. “The 2010 Nostre Pais Blanc is a blend of 80% Grenache blanc and the rest equal parts Roussanne and Viognier, aged on its lees for six months, with some barrel fermentation but limited exposure to oak. It comes across as a top-flight white Chateauneuf du Pape rather than a less expensive Costieres de Nimes. Light gold in color, with an extraordinary nose of vivid honeysuckle, candle wax, marmalade and tropical fruit, the wine is elegant, has good acidity, and wonderful freshness, but a surprisingly intense, full-bodied mouth feel. Following a tasting, I had this wine with Maryland soft shell crabs, and it was an exquisite marriage. Drink it over the next year.”

Red

2009 Dufouleur Freres Hautes Cotes De Nuits

This is the best Pinot Noir in the store for under $20.  2009 was a standout vintage for red Burgundy and this bottle is a perfect example.  The Wine Advocate explains, “The sweet spot in 2009 is at the entry-level, where a great number of wines outperform their humble pedigrees.”

2007 Tierra Prometida Bonarda

We sold out of the Malbec from this fine winery last week, so come and taste their excellent red from the Bonarda grape at this closeout price.  The name Tierra Prometida (Promised Land) reflects the belief that Mendoza is Argentina’s Promised Land for wine. Inspired by the love of this land, celebrated winemakers Hector and Pablo Duirgutti have created this project with owners Jacqueline Tytgat and Monica Lopez.  Production levels here are small – less than 5000cs per year divided between Malbec, Cabernet, Bonarda, Reserva and Gran Reserva Malbec.  Vine ages are between 25-52 years old and all wines are handled under artisanal practices.  Bonarda displays aromas and flavors of violets, black raspberries and plums with firmer acidity than Malbec.

2006 Vermeil Zinfandel

We had such great response to the Proprietary Red wine featured last week that we’re showcasing his excellent Zinfandel that the region is noted for.  It is amazingly youthful for a six year old Zin.  Aromas of ripe blackberry, underbrush and licorice lead to concentrated huckleberry and cracked-pepper beef flavors that finish with lively tannins.  Below is a link to video of my visit with winemaker Paul Smith in January 2010 in the old vine zinfandel vineyards: Calistoga vineyards with winemaker Paul Smith

Riesling of the Week

2010 Von Buhl Armand Kabinett

Von Buhl had a standout 2010 vintage.  In fact, at a recent GWS (German Wine Society) event, this outsold the other seven highly rated wines from the heralded 2009 vintage.  It’s the electric acidity balancing the ripe, high- extract fruit that makes it so special.
